It Matters

"You can wear that at home but not outside. It's a little tight around the chest." I know our parents are trying to protect us by saying these things because the world will stare if our boobs are noticeable. Well I'm sorry I have boobs. What do you want me to do? Wrap myself around my chest so that I'll look flat; so that there's nothing to see? Is it my fault that I have this part of my body? I have hair, should I control that too? Is my hair asking to be eye raped? I may not be a victim of rape but I am a victim of eye rape, name calling and disturbing gestures and flashing. Excuse you, I did not ask to see your dick. Put it back in your pants. Unless you have my consent, you will not dare try to come forward. I can have sex whenever I want to and with whomever, but if you for a second think that you have the right to assume that it's okay to push me, if I'm not in the mood or if I say no, think again. That is rape. If your partner says that they're not in the mood, back off. It doesn't matter if you've been together for ten days or ten years. No means NO.
"Hey girls, go back to the kitchen. HaHaHa...... that was a joke, don't get so offended." Oh I'm sorry, I fail to understand your joke; you have a shit sense of humor. A few years ago I probably would've brushed this off. This is because I grew up thinking that this is how things are and I just have to live with it. As I started to get older, I have seen and experienced a number of things and I realized that it shouldn't be like this. We shouldn't have to live this way because some men can't put it in their fucking pants. No, I'm not secretly hiding the fact that I've been raped or assaulted, but that doesn't mean the other things don't matter. As long as I'm a woman stepping outside and fear for my safety because I've been followed around by a man looking at me like I'm a piece of meat for an entire block, it matters. It matters that my friend and I have to think twice about going on a vacation by ourselves without a male friend, because the only way you can be absolutely safe is when you have a man whom you know by your side. That is the only way you're not dangled like a pinata ready to be attacked. It matters that I have to hold my shirt up, if it slides down my neck while sitting in an auto, so that I don't get glances by the auto driver from his mirror. It matters that if you've been harassed and you ask them to stop, the only way they will stop is if they see a man around you.
These may seem like such trivial things to some, but even an ocean is made up of tiny drops and if it hinders the way I would like to live my life, it definitely matters.
So the next time you want to say things like "Dude I raped my paper", think again, or "I'm so fucked, I'm going to be raped", think again, or "I'm going to rape their case", think again. I am not a prude for thinking this. And if you think I'm getting too worked up about it or exaggerating, go fuck yourself, because it all matters.
